 Certified and Regulated Labels

Does your client have to create durable labels to meet certain certifications? Some specialized durable labels must comply with outside standards in terms of their materials, information and construction. Some of these regulated labels include GHS and UL/ cUL/ CSA.

GHS and BS5609

DLS prints Global Harmonized System (GHS) labels, as well as BS5609 Part 2 & 3 certified labels. The Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS), developed by the UN in 1992, standardizes how hazardous substances are labeled to ensure workers worldwide can easily identify chemical hazards. While not a global law, GHS provides recommendations that many countries, including the U.S. (via OSHA in 2012), have incorporated into their chemical safety regulations. GHS labels must meet specific requirements for both quality and durability.

For hazardous materials shipped overseas, labels must also comply with International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) regulations, which often require BS5609 certification. BS5609-compliant labels undergo rigorous testing to ensure they remain intact and legible after prolonged exposure to marine environments, including saltwater submersion, salt spray, temperature fluctuations, and UV exposure. BS5609 testing is divided into two parts: Section 2 evaluates the durability of the label materials, while Section 3 tests the printed label’s durability.

UL/ cUL and CSA Labels

DLS is officially authorized to run UL, cUL and CSA labels. UL labels are found on a wide variety of consumer and industrial products, indicating that Underwriters Laboratories has certified the item for safety. But it's not just the product that must meet standards—the labels themselves are held to strict requirements.

UL labels must follow precise specifications for materials, durability, layout, and content. Every design must be reviewed for compliance, and only suppliers listed in the UL database are authorized to print labels with the UL Mark.

Similar to UL and cUL, CSA labels undergo testing and certification for applicable safety standards. CSA labels typically are accepted in more places globally than UL, which is predominantly sold in North America.

Build your UL and CSA business and increase your profits with rich 4-color process printing in ANY shape label up to 8" wide in virtually any length. Whatever regulations your customer needs to follow, DLS can give recommendations to keep their durable labels compliant.
